Support Team:  Cynthia Lin Hsieh, Lynn Tran

Funding Agencies

This project is one of six projects in the 5-year grant "Appropriate Access to Maternity Services for Rural Parturient Women" funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and Child and Family Research Institute.

Project Summary

This study is a continuation of another project on Maternal and Newborn Outcomes from 1994-1998.  The purpose of this study will be to

  1. Examine maternal and newborn outcomes between 1998-2004;
  2. Compare newborn and maternal outcomes for women living in small communities that have lost local access to hospital maternity care services with women living in communities that have not;
  3. Examine the effect of local access to cesarean section on newborn and maternal outcomes for women living in small rural communities; and
  4. To evaluate previous pilot work on Newborn outcomes from 1994 to 1999 which used catchment definition by provincial Local Health Area and not GIS based surface travel time.

Project Update

The research team has submitted a data request to the British Columbia Reproductive Care Program for maternal and newborn outcomes between 2000-2004.  A decision from the research review committee is still pending.
